Red Dwarf Review

Do you love sci-fi? Do you also love comedy? Why not watch red dwarf. A hilarious sci-fi comedy about a human named Dave Lister, Felix Sapien (cat evolved into a human) named Cat, a hologram named Arnold Rimmer and mechanoid named Kryten.

The plot is about Lister trying to get back to earth after being in suspended animation for 3 million years instead of 18 months. He finds out the crew on the ship he is on have been killed due to a radiation leak and the ship’s computer, Holly, has created a hologram of Lister’s annoying roommate Arnold Rimmer. Lister’s pregnant Cat has had kitten’s but after millions off years, they evolved into human-like creatures. Along the way they find a nervous, selfless mechanoid called Kryten.

This bizarre plot may seem off putting to some people but the show pulls it off very well, resulting in one of the best British comedies of all time. It’s IMDB rating is 8.4/10 and a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 79% so it’s not just me who thinks it’s a brilliant show.

One of my favourite moments is in the season 3 episode, “Polymorph” where an alien creature comes on board and takes one emotion from each character. It’s hilarious watching the character act this way especially Rimmer who is normally and annoying pessimistic character but is now an optimistic anger-less person.

Another favourite moment for me is in the season 5 episode, “Quarantine”. The crew find an abandoned lab and encounter a homicidal doctor who is also a hologram. The doctor gives Rimmer a virus which makes me act homicidal and insane. The best moment is when the virus goes into full effect and Rimmer dresses in a checkered dress and blonde wig with a penguin puppet and tries to hunt the others down. I know it sounds mad but trust me it’s funny.

I would recommend this show to young teens and adults, due to some swearing and it’s 12 rating, and to anyone who likes comedy not just sci-fi as the sci-fi is not forced down your throat and is mostly a silly show set in space and some sciency aspects.

I love this show and rate it 10/10.
